A Message from the President

Welcome to William Carey International University, a global learning community committed to discovering and addressing the roots of human problems around the world.

Perceiving the epic proportions of human suffering around the globe, we are moved to join the cause of seeking change and transformation for individuals, societies, and nations. Our aim is to link prepared, thoughtful students to this inestimable global cause.

Our university’s special focus on the needs of the world – as seen through the eyes of the complex field of international development – is part of a long-standing tradition across the centuries. While perhaps not large in number, there have been significant leaders at all points in the human story that saw beyond the needs and fortunes of their own people and offered themselves in service to a larger cause.

One of the most outstanding examples of this selflessness is William Carey. As you read about him in this catalog, you will understand how it is we came to name our institution after him!

• We are committed to International Development. We are committed to the well-being of the least developed nations of the world. In this pursuit we are well aware that very few of their problems can be resolved without taking into account social, cultural and religious factors (among others) not just technical and economic matters.

• We are committed to you, our students . We are committed to our constituents: development personnel laboring to bring about change. We applaud your commitment to world development and commit to delivering you programs, courses, curriculum, and support that energize and reinforce your pursuit of that aim.

• We are committed to offering degree programs of excellence . We are committed to meeting the degree needs of students at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels. Our learning opportunities radically integrate various academic disciplines into a single course, curriculum, or degree program, providing a unique perspective unmatched by our peer universities.
