Reflections on a Russian Edition of Companion to the Poor
By Dr. Viv Grigg
Companion to the Poor has been published now in multiple languages. Its story of pioneering a new theology and practice of mission launched a wave of incarnational urban poor missions, where people go and live with the poor.
For the Portuguese and Spanish versions this became a counterpoint to Catholic-Marxist Liberation Theology as this story developed an engagement but from a strong Biblical exegesis and became a marker for those in the Holistic ministry movement globally now anchored in Micah Network. In Brazil, many workers, on reading the Portuguese version, relocated to the favelas. After 30 years, those works have now multiplied to thousands of people. One brother in Nagaland, a leader of a large church of 3000, read it, resigned and went to live with his family among migrant workers, starting a justice mission across India. The biggest market has been the Korean edition. Multiple apostolic missions(orders) have started because of the book
Sometimes one wonders why it has had such impact as wherever it goes it seems people are touched. It was written while living in a caravan in a forest, after facing demonic attack in Manila, returning home ill, then being released from that curse. Then 70 women prayed for me as I wrote it. So in this I discern the divine sovereignty over its pages. A publisher showed up on my doorstep one dark night, just as I finished the first chapter, asked to read it and offered to publish it. That never happens.
Perhaps you know of some older praying ladies. Send them my way!! We need to bathe this Russian version with the same anointing of the Spirit of God!
