44 years ago WCIU was founded…

“…Most of the narratives in the places where I live center the experience of white people and white men particularly, because, well, we have been the hunters. I have benefited from this even when I did not desire to do so. So as a person living where the story of “my people” is the dominant narrative, how can I enter into the stories of others and gain a broader perspective?…”

The historical record testifies to the early and critical roles that Blacks played in igniting the Protestant missions movement. Yet their names, contributions, sacrifice and examples have been ignored. It is time to reclaim and celebrate this great legacy!

At the risk of seeming to disagree with Morgan Freeman, who makes an important and valid case that giving only a month to Black History is a meager step, I want to acknowledge and invite us to this important month...and while I agree with Freeman that we should give more than a month, in the interest of not giving less, I am posting some highlights that may especially be of interest in the WCIU world of mission... that is, the contributions to the advance of the world mission movement made by African Americans.

One of our current students, Thu Ha Chow was recently a panelist at the 2020 Missional Business Form hosted by the Singapore Center for Global Missions (SCGM). The conference has helped me consolidate what I had been learning in my WCIU course. God’s plan to restore this planet and its people to reflect His glorious design is as Ralph Winter described it - as holistic and beyond saving souls for heaven…
